Major Arcana XVIII – The Moon

  • Planetary Ruler : ☾ The Moon ☾
  • Tree of Life Pathway : Netzach – Malkuth
  • Keys : Dreams | Inner Vision | Intuition | Primitive Energy

The light reflected by the Moon radiates down onto the back of the goddesses head. This light filters through the subconscious mind where the energy gestates and when we are ready comes to us in our dreams as inner visions. The goddess cups a Solar orb close to her womb, both at once nourishing, protecting and presenting the the orb to us. In the moonlight the goddess is reflected in the pool of water in which she stands. She is both in and of her element – the watery domicile of Pisces – the dreaming. The pool not only reflects but also supports life . A fish raising it’s head above the surface, flowers growing at the pools edge. Just as the dreams she embodies, she only presents to us in this liminal, in-between space.

Looking down into the pool, we see mostly ripples and reflections which live at the threshold or surface of the water. While depth is implied, and assumed, it is is only made visible through the body of the fish of Pices which can be seen below the surface. The fish reveals to us a world below the surface – the world of our subconscious – a world that is intensely obscured in our state of awake.

The reflections on the pools surface are of the light generated by the Sun Absolute radiated back to Earth from the body of the moon. There is a diffuse quality to this light which gives us a clue as to how to access our occult subconscious mind – access does not come through direct contact, like the active electric force of the sun, but rather through adopting a reflective, posture – a stillness, a surrender, a listening, an opening to the reception of subtle impressions from deep within our internal imaginal landscape. This is why the Moon is depicted as a protector and nourisher of the Orb – she holds it with a deep reverence while engaged in a passive exchange of energy – her reverence and love feeds the Orb, and the light of the Orb, as reflected by the Moon, her world .
